Indicative prices, for illustration

Shares of several large technology companies advanced in extended trading, outpacing most other sectors as participants appeared to rotate toward growth-oriented names. The gains were broad but not uniform, with semiconductor-related stocks showing the largest illustrative moves.

Market watchers suggested that improving sentiment toward future earnings, along with a pause in the recent rise in bond yields, may have encouraged buyers. Lower yields can make the long-dated cash flows of growth companies look more attractive in valuation models, although this relationship is far from constant.

Extended-hours sessions come with important caveats. Liquidity is thinner, spreads are wider, and prices seen after the close do not always carry over into the regular session. A move that looks significant in the evening can be largely unwound by the opening bell.

Other sectors were quieter, with financial and energy shares trading close to unchanged. Participants will now look to the regular session for confirmation, and for any new commentary that could alter the picture. Nothing in the early activity suggests the pattern will continue.
