Sleep and Trading Performance

You can have a great plan and still trade badly on four hours' sleep. Tiredness slows your thinking, shortens your patience and makes your feelings harder to manage. A trade that looks obviously wrong after a good night can look tempting after a bad one.

CFDs are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly because of leverage. Make sure you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

How poor sleep shows up in your trading

  • You react to every small price move instead of waiting for your setup.
  • You find it harder to accept a loss and move on.
  • You miss details: the wrong size, the wrong market, a forgotten stop loss.
  • You take risks you'd normally avoid, just to feel something happen.

Why traders sleep badly

Markets never really stop. Forex trades 24 hours a day on weekdays, crypto never closes and major data often lands late at night in Asia. A big result can also keep your mind racing long after you've logged off.

Habits that help

  1. Keep regular hours. Go to bed and get up at similar times every day, weekends included.
  2. Set a screen cutoff. Stop checking prices at least an hour before bed. Use alerts and orders so you don't feel you have to watch.
  3. Pick your session. Trade the session that suits your time zone and your sleep, rather than every market open.
  4. Write it out. After a big day, put it in your journal, then step away. Getting it on paper helps your mind let it go.
  5. Watch the stimulants. Cut caffeine later in the day, and keep alcohol away from trading time and bedtime.
  6. Keep your bedroom for sleep. Dark, quiet, cool and free of trading screens.

Rule of thumb

If you slept badly, trade smaller or not at all. The market will still be there tomorrow. If poor sleep carries on for weeks, speak to a doctor.
